The 2011 International Choral Jazz & Mass Participatory Musicking Festival would like to invite composers to send in works specifically written for mass choral forces of over 800, with the intent to display unique spatial characteristics of the performance venue through interplay of spatial and location characteristics.
What is Mass Participatory Musicking?
Mass participatory musicking performances emphasize on involving lay performers (choral members as well as audience) in interesting interplay of improvisatory sounds and pre-designed music. The choirs don’t just sing; they also use speech, vocal sounds, simple percussions, body gestures and noise to weave a spatially active and dynamic tapestry of sound as choreographed by the composer. The over 800 choral force could be subdivided into different groupings, each could perform either according to pre-designed musical scores (instructions) or involving aleatoric controlled improvisations. The audience can also be involved in interactive musical gestures with the performers to create a truly holistic musical experience for all. The mass-choir will be seated surrounding the audience and exploits interesting spatial interplay through detailed coordination and execution.
The organizers welcome international submission of such kind of works up to 20 minutes in duration which could be accompanied by any of the following instrumental forces:-
• Single strings
• Single woodwinds
• Single brass
• Up to 3 percussionists
• Electronics (interactive Max/ESP or pre-recorded tracks)
Chosen works will be performed at the Closing Gala Concert of the Festival at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall on 13 July, 2011 (Wed) by a mass choir of over 1,000 with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.
