Netzwerk Junge Ohren has announced the prize-winners of this year’s JUNGE OHREN PRIZE 2011, at a prize-giving ceremony that ended the YEAH! Festival in Osnabrück. The Junge Ohren (Young Ears) prizes are awarded for excellence in music projects made by professionals for youth audiences, and is open to projects from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Prizes were awarded in 4 categories: Best Practice for Concert Formats; Best Practice with Youth Participation; LabOhr; and Music & Media.

The prize for Best Practice with Youth Participation went to the production RÜCKSPIEGEL: eine Hörsituation, a composition by Juliana Hodkinson, developed with Konzerthaus Junior, ohrenstrand.net, Kammerensemble Neue Musik, and three Berlin schools – Sophie-Scholl Schule, Heinrich-Hertz Gymnasium and Rückert-Oberschule.  The schools’ workshops were facilitated by Konzerthaus Junior and led by Volker Schindel, Ute Wassermann, Leonard Petersen and Peter Weinsheimer. The prizes in the Best Practice categories are supported by the German Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.

Rückspiegel: eine Hörsituation was performed at Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin, on 18th February 2011, by Danish bass baritone Jakob Bloch Jespersen, Kammerensemble für Neue Musik, and pupils from Sophie-Scholl Schule and Rückert-Oberschule, conducted by Manuel Nawri and Oliver Pohl, with concert graphics by Denise Burt. Rückspiegel: eine Hörsituation was created for youth audiences in the age-group 14+, and is based on a reverse re-working of Schubert’s song-cycle ‘Winterreise’.  Three Berlin school classes worked on vocal, instrumental and sound-file contributions to the production, giving the participants a hands-on opportunity to approach both classical music and contemporary sounds within professional structures.
